Anyone with a sincere desire can
take up yoga! We find that the students most likely to stick
with the practice are those that have the most challenges when
starting. This includes those of us that may be stiff or uncoordinated.
Of course, those with a physical background will enjoy the inherent
challenges found within Ashtanga.
There are 5 basic components in the practice of Ashtanga:
Breath: Students will learn the foundation of yoga breathing
: Ujjayi Pranayama
Posture: In Ashtanga, students are guided through the asana
one-by-one so that proper skeletal alignment is achieved. This
empowers the yogi to practice safely on her own.
Movement: The coordination of breath, postures, and movement
is the basis of vinyasa practice. This gives the practice a beautiful,
flowing, dance-like quality
Core: The sequences of Ashtanga build greater awareness, strength,
and flexibility of the core of the body. The precise technique
of Moola Bandha is learned with each posture.
Meditation: In Ashtanga, meditation is developed by doing. The
basic principle is that observing the body, breath, and mind,
one is able to connect with those same elements. Since the mind
tends to follow the mind, each posture has an assigned drishti
or looking place.
